One mission in the Modern Warfare campaign provoked a violent reaction from players after portraying the Russians as the culprit in referring to the actual event instead of the Americans.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare raised the dust with its single-player campaign, but not in shocking scenes but in twisting historical facts. Although Infinity Ward and Activision claim that the game has a fictitious story that has nothing to do with real events, some things are still taken from actual history. That in itself would not be controversial if the version of history presented by Modern Warfare was not contrary to known facts.
In particular, one of the missions in the game is called "The Highway of Death" and takes place in a valley where, according to the game, the Russians bombed a convoy. The problem is that the name "Highway of Death" is used to refer to a real road connecting Iraq and Kuwait that killed hundreds of people in the 1991 bombing. The difference, however, is that the bombing was not due to the Russians but to the Americans. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is an American game and this is where the controversy arises.
It's not the only thing in the new CoD that is reminiscent of a real-history event, but it has caught the eye of many as a potential attempt to remake history by America. Certainly, in Russia this has provoked violent reactions. One TV station had a story in which the game was criticized for Russophobia and American propaganda, and calls for a boycott of the game across Russia.
