GTA: San Andreas - welcome to the jungle

Fifteen years ago today, the European version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for the PlayStation 2 console was released.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas today is 15 years old. More specifically, he had his birthday three days ago, but as the games had different release dates for different markets in the last decade, the cult San Andreas has appeared in Europe today, so we decided to mark his birthday today.

GTA: San Andreas was the third and last GTA title on the sixth generation of consoles. He brought us the story of Carl “CJ” Johnson, who returns to his home district of Grove Street and tries to stabilize the situation between the two warring gangs. CJ was a very well received character not only because of his underdog performance but also because players were able to modify him at will - from his physical appearance to visual appearance.

San Andreas also brought a whole new region to California-inspired GTA games. Instead of one city like in the previous two games, players had as many as three cities in San Andreas - Los Santos (Los Angeles), San Fierro (San Francisco) and Las Venturas (Las Vegas). It was also the first GTA to offer us greater geographical diversity by being able to explore the mountain and desert landscapes.

For many, San Andreas sat well because it was set in the nineties, an era where instant stars, reality programs and the widespread internet were still missing. Guns, 2Pac, Joe Cocker and other music greats sang on the radio; there was no political correctness, there was police brutality and conspiracy theories about the existence of Bigfoot.

Like previous games in the GTA series, San Andreas has raised a lot of dust, been accused of stereotyping the African-American race and provoked a number of controversies. The biggest one is definitely related to the possibility of sexual intercourse with several female characters in the game.

Specifically, the game code contained a mini-sex game to which the player would be invited to offer "coffee". Although this part of the game was not available in the console versions, in the PC version it materialized with the famous Hot Coffee modification, after which Rockstar had numerous problems in court.

GTA: San Andreas has achieved enviable success and has become the best-selling game for the PlayStation 2 with over 17 million copies sold. One year after its release, it received PC and Xbox versions, and since 2013 it can be played on mobile platforms as well.
