Call of Duty: Modern Warfare for PS4 will not be sold in Russia
Sony's Russian branch has banned the sale of a new Call of Duty game in the digital edition in the local market.
Sony has withdrawn Call of Duty: Modern Warfare from sale on the Russian PlayStation Store, and it appears that physical boxed editions will not be available in Russia either. The outcome is one that has been hanging in the air ever since the beta testing of the game in question was withdrawn in Russia, and it has to do with the depiction of Russian soldiers within a single-player campaign.
Specifically, the Russian military is not the enemy in the Modern Warfare story, they are terrorists of the Al-Qatala group. However, the Russian military is fighting terrorists in the game as well as members of the resistance to the Russian occupation of the fictitious state of Urzikstan. As the player partly controls the leader of the movement, a woman called Farah, the killing of Russian soldiers will be shown in the game itself.
The Activision label reported that Modern Warfare's story was fictitious and that Sony was the one who put the ban on sale. Interestingly, Microsoft did not make such a move, so the Xbox version will be sold in Russia. The PC version will be available through the Battle.net platform, and this is owned exclusively by Activision so they can do whatever they want with the game.
