Electronic Arts' burglary of pride and achievement ended in the Guinness Book of World Records
A statement by a community manager at Electronic Arts about the Star Wars Battlefront 2 lootbox controversy remained perpetuated in the Guinness Book of Records.
In the fall of 2017, Star Wars fans found themselves offended by the fact that Electronic Arts had locked most of the cult characters in Star Wars Battlefront 2 and worked out a process to unlock them to get players to spend real money. After criticism escalated on Reddit, a community manager at Electronic Arts explained that they just wanted to give players a sense of pride and achievement through unlocking the characters.
That explanation became the most current quarrel on the internet in record time, and it only set a new record. Specifically, the comment received 667,828 negative ratings on Reddit, more than anything else on the platform. These days, that record has been immortalized in the new edition of the Guinness Book of World Records as the worst accepted commentary on Reddit.
The pursuit of a "sense of pride and achievement" in the end was not in vain. The prize boxes were dropped from Star Wars Battlefront 2 the next year, and the game itself later became more than fair to all customers, and it still receives new content today.
