Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee - Better a Grave than a Slave

To this day, exactly 22 years ago, the first escape of one of the strangest characters on the PlayStation console has begun.

PlayStation brought an exciting new 3D dimension to the world of consoles in the mid-1990s. However, this did not mean the automatic extermination of games in 2D, as evidenced by the title Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee, which came out today 22 years ago. The game, originally called Soul Storm, has a sympathetic alien who escapes from slavery in which he is destined to become a processed meat steak.

Abe's escape was accompanied by a series of obstacles and puzzles. Gameplay boiled down to jumping and occasionally sneaking, but the most interesting mechanics involved telepathic control of other characters. During Abe's adventure, we also had to rescue other slaves, giving them orders and taking them to safe places. The goal was to rescue more than 50 slaves to get a good ending to the story.

The imaginative Oddworld quickly became a hit among players due to its uniqueness. Although it was a rather challenging game that didn't forgive many mistakes, Oddworld played more than half a million players on PlayStation, DOS and Windows. The commercial success of the game allowed its creators to release three more sequels by 2005.

This was followed by a break of nine years, and it wasn't until 2014 that we saw Abe again, this time in a revised release called Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty, which first appeared on the PS4 console and then on other platforms (PC, Xbox One, PS3, PS Vita, Wii U, Android and iOS). Currently, the development of the second game in the series, Abe's Exoddus, is under development.
