The Simpsons: Hit & Run - GTA: Springfield

To this day, exactly sixteen years ago, the Simpsons got their best game to date by emulating the GTA series.

The most long-running virtual reality show The Simpsons has had many different attempts to impose its charm on players. The Simpsons once had a game of wrestling, a game of bowling and even a game of skating. But after dozens of attempts, they got their best game in The Simpsons: Hit & Run, which came out today in 2003.

The game was produced by Radical Entertainment (creators of the Prototype series), and they did not hide their role model. They wanted to make a game that would compete with Grand Theft Auto 3. Since they took the project seriously, they hired the creators of the series themselves, as well as the cast from it.

The game had seven missions in which we played with one specific character. Homer, Bart, Lisa, Marge and Apu (a racially diverse lineup) were available. The missions were mostly about driving in a semi-open world. The players could do some crazy things, but the punishment would come in the form of a police chase.

By mocking the GTA series, the Simpsons got the funniest game ever, and such a success couldn't be repeated fifteen years later. The game has sold more than three million copies in PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube and PC versions, but has since unfortunately fallen into oblivion. She is no longer on the market today, and she has not received extensions and remasters.
