Today, exactly 19 years ago, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, the highest rated skateboarding game in history, came out.
In retrospect, I don't think I've yet come across a game that better summarizes the essence of a subculture like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater did. The first part was revolutionary for a number of reasons, but with the duo, there were little things that did not fit in the original. Simply put, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 was a perfect game in its day. Indeed, exactly 19 years ago it was one of the best games on the first PlayStation.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater below brought more content and some welcome mechanics. Levels were larger and more content with the search for so-called. Gaps, the music was crazy, and the graphics were better. We could link the tricks with a "manual", we could build our own parks in the editor, create our own characters and even try out a demo version of Matt Hoffman Pro BMX. The game was first available on PlayStation and then came on PC, Dreamcast and Nintendo 64.
The game, upon its release, achieved an incredible result by becoming one of the highest rated games in history, and it still holds today. True, Metacritic has an average rating of 98 (second best on that platform) based on just 19 reviews, but it was also enough to make THPS2 the highest rated game for the first PlayStation, as well as the highest rated sports video game in history.
In the sale itself, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 was not as successful and by 2007 it had sold 5.3 million units. He should not be resentful, as the game has received even better quality sequels that have added online multiplayer and changed the old campaign format.
However, those later sequels did not remain as memorable as the THPS2 that served as the basis for THPS HD in 2012. Unfortunately, this version of the game is not representative of the real THPS experience, so if you want to play the best of the two today, you may want to spin the original PlayStation version or look for THPS 2X for the Xbox. The PC version can also be playable, but you must first tweak it to make it playable for today's concepts.
