If the Atari VCS console architect is to be trusted, that piece of hardware may never become reality.
Consoles that were implemented using the crowdfunding method do not have a very good reputation. Remember Ouye? If you don't remember, then you agree that this Android console is not worth remembering or you have deeply suppressed its existence. In any case, the upcoming resurrection of Atari's (2600) VCS console is also aided by crowdfunding and is a constant in some issues. The console's output is constantly delayed, and now chief architect Rob Wyatt has abandoned the project.
Wyatt claims Atari didn't pay him his salary for the last six months, after which he was overpaid, and he voluntarily quit. But the move didn't seem to come just because of the money. According to testimonials from sources close to the development of the Atari VCS console, the first prototype motherboard for the device was only made last month. The console should otherwise be delivered to users in spring 2020.
According to The Register, Atari decided to save the console that the console would not be launched with a modified Linux system or an online store selling digital games. There will also be no support for native application services such as Netflix, HBO Go, Spotify and others, but users will need to consume these content through the Chromium browser.
Particularly alarming is that the console supposedly will not have a unified system of controls, which means that there will be no button on the controller with which the player will be able to exit the game, but the console will have to restart to start another game. Admittedly, this is all unofficial information, but it's not like it looked like it would have been different before.
The Atari was completely ignored by the chief architect's allegations and was not reflected in his new article on console development. According to them, development goes according to plan and all of the above applies only to development units, not to a product that should be in the hands of users in less than half a year.
