MediEvil - Avenging corpse

To this day, exactly 21 years ago, a very unusual character - the knight and then the skeleton of Sir Daniel Fortesque - resurrected on the PlayStation.

Colorful platformers like Crash and Spyra could be played on the first PlayStation, but 21 years ago we had another Sony console exclusive that was a little darker in tone. It was MediEvil, an action title in which we, as the skeleton of Sir Daniel Fortesque, fought against the evil wizard of Zaroc and his army of zombies and demons who occupied the kingdom of Gallowmere.

MediEvil was originally developed as a game called Dead Man Dan. In the beginning of development, in mid-1995, it was supposed to be an arcade shooter for the PC and the then Sega Saturn console. However, Sony bought a studio in Cambridge that worked on the project, and the whole thing turned out a little different.

MediEvil has been remembered by many for its excellent atmosphere (and even before dark) and superb music. The gameplay itself had its flies primarily in managing the camera as it was the first 3D game for the development team, but it did add to the players heart because of the benign protagonist. The game's lead designer once revealed that Sir Daniel was particularly popular with female audiences.

MediEvil was one of the first games in which the right analog stick was used to control the camera. What was standard today 20 years ago was atypical, so Sony still allowed the camera to rotate with the R2 / L2 keys

MediEvil has received good reviews everywhere but the Japanese market. The Japanese thought that the idea of a playful character who was too skeletal was a skeleton. Eh, the Japanese. In 2005, the game was reworked for a PlayStation Portable console called MediEvil Resurrection, and originally appeared on the Sony Xperia Play.

This month, MediEvil returns in a modern release through a remaster of the first game, exclusive to the PlayStation 4 console.
