Super Mario Bros. - Your princess is in another castle

Today, exactly 34 years ago, one of the most important games ever made came out on the Nintendo Entertainment Systeam console.

One title is unavoidable when it comes to the most important video games in history. Super Mario Bros. it came out for the NES console in 1985 and was considered the savior of the video game industry after the infamous market crash that happened two years earlier. With his imaginative designs, Mario and his brother, Luigi, have given players hope for video games and proven that this medium can offer quality entertainment.

Super Mario Bros. he met many for the first time with an Italian plumber, but it wasn't really the first game in the series. It was a sequel to the Mario Bros. arcade game, though Nintendo didn't consider the sequel at first but a brand new game. The idea was to create a game that would continue the tradition of "athletic" gameplay, which included running, jumping and skipping. It was only after the prototype phase that it was decided that Mario would be the main character, given that the previous Mario Bros. sold well.

The story of Super Mario Bros. was not told within the game but through a textual description that came in the package. So we learn that Mario is on his way to rescue Princess Peach, who is the only one who can save the mushroom kingdom from turtle tribes that practice black magic. If that reminds you a bit of Zelda, it's no coincidence - SMB and Zelda were developed in parallel.

The name "Super" in the name Super Mario came from the mechanics of collecting the mushroom that Mario grew from. Specifically, this mushroom was called "Super Mushroom" internally. Admittedly, the mechanics of collecting so-called the power-up was designed only afterwards, after the levels were already designed for "little" Mario. The very idea of mushroom as an object that offers improvement is based on Japanese folklore and stories about magic mushrooms. It is also interesting that Nintendo made a conscious decision not to immediately put the player in the role of "Super" Mario, but rather to give him a sense of achievement and progress through the mechanics of mushroom collection.

Super Mario Bros. It will also be remembered as one of the first games during which the division of affairs was practiced. Until the mid-1980s, games were developed by very small teams, and it was not uncommon that only one person was in charge of developing the entire game. Super Mario Bros. worked a seven-member team led by Shigeru Miyamoto and each member was tasked with a specific aspect of the game. This division of business in the video game industry has become standard and is still practiced today.

There are many things that Super Mario Bros. is with. was a pioneer in the video game industry, and one of those was access to music made for play. Previous practice was that playing music was always done after the game was over. However, in the case of SMB, the music was made in parallel with the play, and the composer Koji Kondo wanted her to accompany the player. This is not noticeable at first, but the tempo of the music in SMB perfectly matches the speed of the game. At times when players are asked for quicker reactions, the music suggests a faster rhythm.

Specific is also how Super Mario Bros. in fact, there is no what today's games call a tutorial, and the player is already in the first three seconds of playing the basics of gameplay. The first level of SMB is purposefully designed for this purpose and is often taken as a basic example of good gameplay design as it allows the player to understand the mechanics and rules of the game gradually and naturally.

About the success of Super Mario Bros. not need to spend many words. The game has been sold in more than 40 million copies, which for 20 years was the best selling result for Nintendo games. Super Mario Bros. it opened the door to a series without which no other Nintendo console was left. Simple - if you can't play Super Mario on the console, then it's not Nintendo's device.

Today is Super Mario Bros. you can play on numerous Nintendo platforms. Since last year, the game has also become available on the current Nintendo Switch console as part of a subscription to the Nintendo Online service. If you want to own it, the best way to play it would be to get the NES Classic Edition console that comes with the game.
