The next-gen Sims game could have a huge online component
Simse 4 has played over 20 million players, and EA will try to surpass that figure with a sequel that will likely look like a failed Sims Online game.
It's hard to believe that next week the Sims franchise will celebrate its 20th birthday. For a few franchises, after four games and a million expansions, it can be said that it shows no signs of failing. It is confirmed by a financial statement by EA stating that Sims 4 has played over 20 million players across all platforms.
Of course, 20 million players for the lifetime of a game does not mean that so many copies of the game have been sold, but it certainly shows a general interest in the franchise. It should also be borne in mind that Sims 4, with six years of support, is the longest running game in the franchise, and how it can be played as part of an EA subscription.
It is not surprising, therefore, that EA is looking at how to use that cow milk on the next generation of hardware. The CEO of Andrew Wilson confirmed that Maxis is thinking about the next game with cross-platform technology, cloud gaming and the like. As an example of the direction in which the future Sims game might move, he mentioned the long-running Sims Online game, highlighting its social and competitive component.
We know that Maxis has been working on the next-gen AAA game for which they were hired over a year ago. Recall, the ads sought designers to work on characters, faces, hair, fashion, and clothing.
