A new record has been set in the number of active users on Steam

There was a record number of gamers on Steam yesterday, but they were a bit lazy so they played less than when setting the last record.

Did you sign up for Steam yesterday? If so, you helped that platform create a new record with 18,801,944 subscribers, at one time. That's 264,000 more than the record set now, Jan. 14, 2018, according to SteamDB.

And while this is definitely a success that other gaming platforms can only dream of, one fact is still negative compared to previous results. Specifically, although there were the most logged in users on Steam yesterday than ever before, fewer were active in terms of gaming. So yesterday, around 5.8 million players spent their time inside the games, down 1.2 million from two years ago.

We don't know how many people played in the VR environment, but for Valve, the good news is before the release of Half-Life: Alyx that the number of users of VR devices on Steam has increased significantly, reaching 12 million in the 12th month. It's not the total number of VR users, only those who were active during the month, but it would certainly be interesting to see how many there are, purely for comparison with VR players on the PlayStation 4 console where PS VR devices have more than five million users.
