GTA 4 multiplayer is shutting down on PC, but there's good news

Rockstar has found ways to get GTA 4 back on Steam. Some will find this compromise a solution while leaving others in mourning.

Grand Theft Auto 4 is back on sale on Steam on March 19th this year after more than two months off the platform. However, the game will not return in the same release as Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition, and the changes made by that version will affect the existing owners of Grand Theft Auto 4 on PC.

The news is both good and bad at the same time - it depends how you turn it. Specifically, if you only bought GTA 4 on Steam, with no Episodes from Liberty City expansions, then the good news is that on March 19, you will get those expansions for free because your existing GTA 4 will become GTA 4: Complete Edition.

Admittedly, this Complete Edition is a bit misleading as some things will disappear from the game. For example, radio stations RamJam FM, Self-Actualization FM and Vice City FM will no longer be able to listen after the said date, at least not without modes.

However, the biggest loss will be the complete shutdown of online multiplayer. It is true that this MP component was never popular as GTA Online or even as GTA SAMP, but remained remembered as the first official online component in the GTA series. Technically, it will still be able to play on PS3 and X360 consoles, but it will be a collateral victim of Rockstar breaking all links to Games for Windows Live.
