The next generation of consoles will not be senile, more games will be kept in memory

We've already heard that ninth-generation consoles will launch games much faster and will virtually eliminate downloads. But it is less well known that we will be able to pause multiple games at a time.

Earlier this month, while we were all discussing the cumbersome design of the Xbox Series X console, we got under the radar news of interesting functionality that would be available on that console, and is not currently feasible on existing consoles. Specifically, it has been said that the new Xbox will be able to use its NVME SSD for virtual memory, which means, among other things, that it will be able to remember running games in memory. And it's not a mistake when we say plural games - it is mentioned that the console will be able to launch the second game without completely exiting the first one.

This is not possible on current consoles, because every time you start the second game, it must first shut down. This is acceptable to many because the game goes off when the console is switched off and two games cannot be played at the same time anyway. However, it is a nice option when the console is put into stand by mode - when you re-ignite it, your game is ready to play where you left off without ever loading. Such, for example, is extremely useful on a Switch console that literally has a pick-up & play format and does not necessarily depend on the TV.

There is no mention yet of how many running Xbox Seriex X games and (very likely) PlayStation 5 will be able to save in memory, but it is clear that this will only be an option. We do not expect consoles to have huge SSD capacity, and game installations will become larger. Therefore, it is questionable how much we will benefit from this functionality, but it is good to know that such a thing will exist.
