Nvidia says the RTX 2080 Max-Q chip is more powerful than in future consoles

The Nvidia CEO made a rather unnecessary comparison of pears and apples.

These days, at a Nvidia conference in China, one could hear a comparison that practically boils down to "my dad is stronger than your dad." Specifically, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the existing GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q graphics card for laptops is already more powerful than what next-gen consoles will offer at the end of 2020.

Of course, this statement came about because PlayStation 5 and Xbox (Series X) use AMD's architectures, so it's important to undermine the importance of what the competition is doing in this context. Technically speaking, Nvidia may be right about the hardware side, but gaming laptops and gaming consoles are actually pears and apples.

The price of gaming laptops with RTX cards ranges from a thousand euros and more, while the expected price of the next consoles is around 500-700 euros. Of course, laptops are sufficient on their own, while consoles require a television, but this is just another proof that there are two very different things. Another story would be that Nvidia made these claims for their Tegra series of chips, which are also used in the Nintendo Switch console.

In any case, it should be borne in mind that the hardware capability of ninth-generation consoles has not yet been thoroughly demonstrated, so that all the specs about some kind of comparison are already falling into the water.
