Origin client for PC will no longer exist, but will EA Desktop App

Electronic Arts' Origin is retiring - at least as far as the name goes. PC gamers will still have a separate client for EA games, just under a different name.

For nine years, the publishing house Electronic Arts on PC has been forcing its platform called Origin. Although users were initially attracted to free games every month, they ended up doing so in the meantime, and the platform itself hasn’t changed significantly in half a decade. They created additional confusion on it by introducing subscriptions for Origin Access and Access Premiere.

This year, there have been major changes in the business of Electronic Arts. First, the company started selling its PC games outside of Origin, ie on Steam, and then it was announced that the EA Play service (renamed Access) would be merged with Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass service on PC. The changes do not end there either, because it has now been confirmed that the name "Origin" is completely gone down in history.

This will coincide with the launch of a new version of the client for the PC, which for now is only called the EA Desktop App. It is stated that this client will be faster to use, that we will find and install EA games on it faster than before, and we will be able to set limits on how long each game can be played. The biggest change will be that the Electronic Arts platform will no longer be closed, so it will be possible to communicate with contacts on other platforms (eg Xbox, Steam, etc.) on the friends list.

The goal of this change is to make it easier for players to play with as few boundaries as possible, regardless of platform. In the future, more and more Electronic Arts games will use cross-platform multiplayer and cross-progression system, so EA does not want to be able to communicate on the PC only with players on the PC, etc. They also do not want to create confusion with names because the name Origin has so far been associated only with PC gaming, while EA Play will be on both consoles and PC.
