World of Warcraft could get support for raytracing effects

Blizzard has confirmed that they are considering introducing raytracing support in the fifteen-year-old World of Warcraft.

The newly announced Shadowlands expansion for World of Warcraft will not only bring additional content, but will make up a fifteen year old MMO a little more. Specifically, Blizzard has revealed that they are currently exploring the possibility of implementing raytracing effects for the WoW engine. They stressed that they will continue to aim for the game to be played by as many players as possible, but they want the game to keep pace with modern technological capabilities.

They have already laid the groundwork for this, as previous expansion has brought support for DirectX 12, which is a major prerequisite for raytracing. It is unknown, however, how World of Warcraft would benefit from the benefits of raytracing effects. It may improve its lighting system, but it may only be a less significant implementation that would be reflected in reflections and the like.

In any case, WoW will not be the first or last older game to receive raytracing support. Recently, Nvidia has opened a branch that will deal with just beautifying old games using raytracing, much like they did with Quake 2.
