Ratchet & Clank - Intergalactic Rangers to Fight Drake
To date, seventeen years ago, PlayStation received two new icons that served as platform mascots.
At the turn of the generations between the first and second PlayStation, Sony lost ownership of Crash and Spyr, which went to other platforms as well. However, Jak and Daxter, Sly Racoon and Ratchet & Clank came in instead. It was this last duo that was launched today, exactly seventeen years ago.
Ratchet & Clank found its way between a platformer and a third-person shooter, and remained praised for its imaginative characters, enemies and crazy weapons. The game first came to life because of a collaboration between two studios - Insomniac Games and Naughty Dog, since it originated on the technology originally developed for the Jak and Daxter game. Interestingly, both studios have been in the "same family" since 2019 and are owned by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
The title duo changed a number of shapes during development, so Ratchet was at one point a lizard, but later became a cat class due to his association with agility. Clank was supposed to be presented as a three-part robot, but his designers realized that it would unnecessarily complicate the character. Still, Clank in the game can use other robots called Gadgebots.
Although gameplay was mostly about platformer elements, collecting screws and fighting enemies, there were also some separate mini-games, such as hovering. One of the more impressive levels included a battle in the air where players controlled the Ratchet & Clanka aircraft.
Ratchet & Clank achieved a notable result for one platformer. By 2006, it was among the 50 best-selling games for the PS2 console in the US. The sequels were followed by intervals each year, and by 2013 there were as many as eleven. Moving to the PlayStation 4, the game was reworked and accompanied by a movie adaptation. Unfortunately, the movie was not very successful, so the future of the movie series is now questionable.
