Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - Soap, Spirit and Price

To this day, twelve years ago, the Call of Duty series made the leap from historical conflict to fictitious scenario and modern warfare.

Twelve years ago today, the Call of Duty series has made the most significant leap in its history. The Infinity Ward development team bravely embarked on a topic that was still controversial to a certain section of the audience. Terrorism and US involvement in other people's conflicts were central themes of Modern Warfare, in part the attraction factor that helped the game attract new audiences. The single-player campaign remained remembered for unexpected events, such as the dying of one of the playful characters; but also at legendary levels such as the one in Chernobyl.

For many, Modern Warfare was their first encounter with the CoD franchise, considering it was the first part of a series that came out at the same time for PCs and consoles. Back then, the relatively new Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms got popular online gaming in multiplayer, and the rest is history.

The most significant addition to multiplayer were the so-called killstreaks that gave the player the ability to summon a helicopter or attack from the air after a series of eliminations. After each match, players gained experience points and unlocked new weapons, abilities, etc.

There were other times when nothing in multiplayer could be bought with real money. In the PC version, players also received new folders for free, while the consoles had to pay ten euros for the folders.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare introduced the pattern by which three different teams still create different iterations in the series today. It's also clear why: it was the best-selling game of 2007 and the perfect recipe for continued success. The Modern Warfare series thus experienced two more direct sequels, and in 2016 received a Remastered release. The multiplayer community lives to this day.
