Doom 64 is now 2048 times more demanding than it was 23 years ago

Requests for the Doom 64 remaster have also arrived, which will also be playable on PC at 1000 frames per second.

Along with the much-anticipated Doom Eternal comes Doom 64, a kind of remaster of a game that has been exclusive to the ancient Nintendo 64 console for more than two decades. campaign. And these new content will be able to come in at 1000 fps if you have a strong enough computer.

Now you probably think - well this is old Doom, it can go on a smart toaster too. Surprisingly - not quite so. Doom 64 on a PC is looking for a configuration that is technically incomparably more capable than the former Nintendo 64 console.

It is true that these are "pears and apples" and that we are comparing the complexity of the original and the remaster, but once there was only 4 megabytes of working memory for this game, while the remaster requires a minimum of 8 gigabytes. And it's not that the remaster brings some terribly big graphical improvements - in the first place only the resolution of the textures is increased.

But that's how PC optimization plays; if the game is looking for Windows 10 at a minimum, then it doesn't make sense to optimize it for ancient hardware that isn't capable of running that operating system. Basically, here's what hardware Doom 64 requires:

64-bit minimum

  • OS: Windows 10
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-750
  • GPU: R7 240 | GTX 660 | Intel HD 530
  • RAM: 8 GB

1997 hit recommendation

  • OS: Windows 10
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-2400 | AMD Phenom II X6 1075T 3.0 GHz
  • GPU: GTX 780 | R9 290X
  • RAM: 8 GB
