Xbox Game Pass will no longer be "Xbox"

Microsoft will in future call its Xbox Game Pass subscription service only Game Pass to make it easier to have the service available on multiple devices.

The name Xbox has long referred not to a specific console or device brand but to a gaming ecosystem. The Xbox is a gaming device, but also a platform within Windows 10. The Xbox was also a platform label for the Game Pass subscription service, but it seems that it is now becoming a separate thing and will in future be called only the Game Pass in the case of consoles and Game Pass for PC in the case of personal computers.

This small change in the name, however, does not mean that Microsoft totally renounces the Xbox brand as part of the Game Pass because the Xbox logo will still be present next to the Game Pass name. Only no one will read it like an Xbox Game Pass anymore but just a Game Pass. And to be honest - that's what most users have called this subscription service before.

This should also remove potential ambiguities about what the Game Pass represents. Some PC players are still unaware that the (Xbox) Game Pass is available on that platform as well, not just on Xbox consoles. Also, in the future, Game Pass will be available on mobile devices via streaming, so removing the Xbox from the name makes sense.

After all, we all like shorter names. There is a reason why Netflix is just Netflix and not Netflix Movie & TV Streaming Service.
