PUBG sold 70 million copies, but sales slowed
Battle Royale hit PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has cemented its status as one of the best-selling games of all time.
The PUBG corporation announced that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have sold 70 million copies so far. This is far from the popularity of the mobile version of the same game, but PUBG is free on mobile phones so it is still an ungrateful comparison.
We last heard about sales statistics for the premium edition of PUBG in 2018 when the game exceeded 50 million copies sold. At that time, it was a rapid growth in sales, so the other information here is that PUBG has sold "only" 20 million copies in the last two years.
While it’s clear that game sales are slowing as the game gets older, it’s worth mentioning that these numbers don’t mean a reduction in the number of new players. Namely, PUBG recently appeared as part of the Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Now subscription services, so it could be played without buying the game itself.
On the other hand, 20 million copies sold is a very respectable number, considering that competitive titles in the battle royale genre are guided by different methods of monetization and are available to all interested players free of charge.
